Relationship of Yoga to Ayurveda

Yoga and Ayurveda are interrelated and interconnected; both spring from the same well of concern for human health and well-being.

While Ayurvedic practices are more or less restricted to the body – and to a certain extent the mind – Yogic practices extend to the emotions and spirit as well. The human constitution is determined by the configuration of constitutions (doshas) that influence the body’s physical functioning and overall well-being. The three doshas are:

•Vata
•Pitta
•Kapha

A healthy body requires a balance. Emotional, physical and psychological reactions happen in the mind and body happens when our constitution is our of balance. An Ayurvedic practitioner may prescribe dietary changes to support and the maintain good health of the patient, often using herbal remedies customized for the patient based on their dosha type. Yogic practices, which benefit different doshas, may also be prescribed and should be practiced under the care of an Ayurvedic healer.
